Familiar Face Returns To Chip Firm's Packaging

You could say that Small Fry Snack Foods went over the wall in order to secure a contract with its widely recognized mascot.

It certainly wouldn't be an "egg-ageration" of the truth. And there's no doubt, the new corporate spokesperson is a good egg.

Humpty Dumpty, the former mascot for Canada's second largest manufacturer of potato chips and salty snacks is being returned to product packaging.

Dumpty's image first appeared on potato chip bags in the early '50s. However, his contract with Small Fry expired in 1994, after the company acquired Humpty Dumpty Foods Inc. and started marketing a wide range of salty snack under various brand names.

While Humpty Dumpty products have continued to sell, Dumpty's character was dropped from packaging - that is until this month's surprise announcement at Small Fry Snack Foods' Brampton manufacturing plant.

"When Humpty left we scrambled to find another celebrity egg who could fill his shoes," quipped Small Fry Chairman and CEO Gerald Schmalz. "We even talked with Mr. Potato Head's people, but in terms of celebrity status, he's small potatoes compared to Humpty, so we're thrilled he's decided to come back."

The reintroduction of the Humpty Dumpty likeness coincides with the company's plans to revitalize the brand name as part of its 1999 growth strategy.
